Ill give as much info as possible. I have a 2004 magna sedan. 3.5l 4 speed auto. It has 150000km. Everything is fine up till 100km/h. Whenever the slightest bit of acceleration is applied between 100km/h and 130km/h the car shudders violently. It feels like it's originating from the front end. This happens even when the cruise control applies the slightest power to maintain speed. On flats or deceleration it goes away completely. Bigger bumps in the road and swerving from side to side seem to affect it too in that if swerving or going over dips or peaks in the road it decreases the shudder. Two things I've been told to look at are inner cv joints and main barring but I would expect symptoms at all speeds of this were the case and as I said, all is fine below 100km/h. Above 130km/h it turns into more of a Suttle vibration. Another thing I've been told it could be is transmission however it is tip tronic and I tried gearing down during shudder which makes no difference and there are no other symptoms. One last thing I noticed is when climbing a long incline the car immits the same smell as when you have been heavy on the brakes. Any ideas?

I suspect more than one thing going on and will need to rule in or out all items related to load and speed. Plain motor mounts would be on the list too. The swerving improving this would make me think wheel bearing(s) or tires with some defects shifting the weight to a better spot on a bearing or tire. Lots to check IMO. The odor is a bit odd to me. Perhaps some oil from even a minor leak/seepage near exhaust parts gets hot enough to burn off but to me that usually smells more like exhaust than that brake burn odor? T

Thank you for your response. I have already checked the mounts and they all appear fine. Im thinking I will probably have to strip the drive line out to check everything and send the wheels in to be checked and balanced. The smell is definitely a distinct brake smell. Could be unrelated. One other symptom that started roughly the same time as all this is I seem to be loosing traction a lot easier when pulling off around corners, almost like the weight is lifting off the wheel. Again, could be unrelated. Just by the way, this whole issue started when I far overloaded the car and did a 2000km trip. The back end was nearly on the stoppers. Yeah I know, stupid but yeah, it happened. :)

Are any of the wheels getting hot when you notice this smell? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No more than usual. I drove the vehicle 1000km today. There doesnt seem to be any unusual heat or wear on tires.....

I didn't say anything about tires. I'm asking about brake heat radiating through the wheel when the smell is present.

That's pretty much only leaving the transmission.

Damn, I was hoping not as it is a hail damaged car so wont be worth the repairs and pretty much cant be sold. Oh well, its done its dues. Time for a new car I think.

Hmmm - all started with an overload and long trip? That changes alignment angles while loaded and that distance would wear tires unevenly. Balancing probably wouldn't fix it and you can balance a square for that matter but it is an opportunity to watch the wheels and tires spin for trueness which you could possibly do by hoisting whole car and spin them yourself - sometimes if extreme enough you'll plain see it. The overload IMO would be hardest on tires and bearings and don't do that again of course. Tires may have even gotten too hot, shifted belts? You can probably rent a trailer and would need a hitch installed and the wiring to trailer for lighting or more depending on how much and if the vehicle is even rated for what for a trailer if at all. Trans itself doesn't like the load or the heat of working harder either. Looking at motor mounts means nothing you test them and watch to see how far they move. Losing traction? Do you mean slipping without the tires slipping or a drivetrain slip? Check trans fluid for at least level and color - could be trouble. Odor. I'll thrust your olfactory glands that you are correct. Check brakes too. Back to bearings: They should have NO free play which would cause problems with anything to do on that one or more, brakes and by the time they show free play you probably don't have long before a total failure and serious problems. Most will growl on shifting loads of steering around a corner or perhaps all the time at least at first. Are you going to do some of this yourself or just trying to find out what is possible for a shop to take on? Some of this even checking is going to take equipment you almost certainly don't have anyway. Tell anyone you deal with the history of what and when it happened just as you have here, T

You need to let a professional diagnose it. Don't assume anything or base a decision like that on Internet advice from someone that hasn't seen the car.

Either way I will be pulling the drive train out and checking it over. Bearings etc. I have been working on cars from a young kid and it is surprising what tools a do have. You have both given me some good ideas of things to look at which is what I was hoping for as this really had/has me stumped. Last point of call will be a professional before I make a final decision. Just saving ridiculous labor costs where possible. lol. Thanks guys.....
