2004 sebring bucks at 2000 rpms

driving down the road and the car starts to buck and stutter, as I went slower it seamed to stop below 2000 rpm. I pulled over and noticed the oil was low for some reason, very low. After refilling oil the car ran fine and engine light went off. Two weeks later the car did same thing, this time oil was fine and car only did it for about 30 seconds I stopped and it drove home great after another week it happens again with my wife driving and it wont stop, she put half quart oil in and it stops next day it starts again to my wife when Im at work. she found out wile trying to get home that any amount of oil added to engine stops this for a brief amount of time, she knows not to over fill oil so she put a cap full of oil in it and it stopped for about 20 miles at a time. I believe it must be some sensor or safety feature to stop some other problem. one other thing the oil light never came on when it was real low

If there a feature to limit engine because of low oil level it's new to me but there could be. How low was it once and how many miles now before needing more. Check for leaks first then I'd move on to check pcv system and a compression test. There may be serious damage,

Tom,
Do you think maybe a oil pressure switch could cause his problem.
That's what it kinda sounds like.

Sure can - I've seen many pour oil out or just drip. For this person everything needs be ruled out and if engine is an oil burned it is trouble as we know.
Good point on the switch as some will drip mostly while driving and not leave a puddle where you park it to alert you,

I'd do a oil pressure test too if i have the switch out just to make sure the main bearings are it good shape.
Yeah i guess theres a number of things that could cause his problem.

thanks for your help, this car has had all routine maintenance so I was very surprised to see the oil low. there are no leaks at all but it may just leak when moving, I also dont smell any burning but that doesnt mean its not. but this car runs excellent when it is not doing this, there is no loss of power and shifting is perfect nice and smooth even when pushed hard. that said last year the oil light came on and would not go off for a few weeks did oil change and it didnt go off right away, thought of oil pres switch then but it went off and its been a year since, I will definitely check that any more info I can get will be greatly appreciated

just to be sure id jack it up or take it to a friends that has jackstands, so you can get under the vehicle, leaks are not always easily spotted and often have to be looked at from below. but you are burning or leaking oil if you had that low oil light come on, and if you were very low. i think this is a series II 3800 motor, if so i know these are notorious for valve guides, valve seals, and valve cover gaskets leaking. i also noticed that although you added oil, it would be "like an poil change, but you didnt change the filter. in my opinion it osunds like an oil pressure switch or sending unit, but that would set off a SES light. just throwin some ideas out there for ya. if you dont see a leak, i know there are dyes, but im not sure if those are only available at dealerships or if parts stores have them.
