2006 grand prix fuel in coolant

2006 pontiac grand prix 3.8L BASE MODEL A couple months ago i replaced the heater hose plastic elbow right above the water pump due to a leak.I noticed a few days ago it was leaking again so i have been adding water till the weekend when i could replace it.The radiator cap was really hard to remove yesterday so i replaced it and filled the radiator.Last night my wife was driving home and the car overheated and died,it started again but ran very rough so i had it towed home.Today i replaced the elbow and did a flush of the cooling system.After refilling the system and starting the car cold,it is still hard to start and runs very rough.Right away the coolant recovery tank started bubbling so i popped the cap and got a very strong gas smell.The engine will rev smoothly but idles rough.There doesnt seem to be any water in the oil.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you,Mike

That doesn't really sound too good. From your description it could be that combustion gases are getting in the coolant system. That happens from a head gasket problem or cracks in the heads or cylinder walls.
You shouldn't run the engine anymore because coolant could be getting into the cylinders. If it happens to fill up a cylinder, it will hydrolock the engine during cranking or running and bend or break a rod.
Pull the spark plugs out and then use a cooling system pressure tester to pressurize the coolant system. Pressurize the system to what the radiator cap is rated for. Let it sit for a while. Unplug the ignition coil module connector and crank the engine. If you see any coolant spew out any of the spark plug holes, you need to start pulling the heads off.
