Hello, My 07 Elantra has 170,000 miles (65,000 on the engine. Just had this engine put in a few months ago, posted about it in the forum in October). This morning I took a short drive. I hit a puddle and right afterwards my car made such a strange noise that I’ve never heard before… it almost sounded like a very low but quiet honking sound twice in a row. My daughter even said “who just honked at us?” Well, immediately after, I was fully stopped pressing on the break and my car started jumping/jolting and shaking as if it was going to break down. It would do this a little, stop, start again, stop, and so on over the course of 5 minutes. Whenever it would do it my rpm gauge would also pop up a little bit and then go back down. Seemed to be happening randomly, putting in park or slightly accelerating didn’t cause a specific change in this. When I got back onto the road and tried to speed up it was definitely struggling to get up to speed, but not in a “bad transmission” kind of way, more so just like the car was on the verge of cutting off. Luckily I lived close so I got home, turned it off, and when I turned it back on and sat for a little bit it was still shaking and slightly jumping in park on and off again before I shut it off. I remembered afterwards the other day I was at about 10mph with my foot off the pedal and felt like the car starting slightly accelerating on its own, looked at the rpms and it was higher than it should have been, but then jumped back down to a normal level. Not sure if related. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get as much info in as possible. Wondering if this could be related to the engine that was put in. Never had issues like this with the car beforehand. (“New” engine was put in bc mechanic messed up oil change and blew up my old engine fyi). Wondering what you all think, Thank you!

The fact that this was triggered by hitting a puddle sounds like too much of a coincidence. The fact that the RPMs jumped tends to indicate a possible problem with the Crankshaft Position sensor. The first thing I would do is have the computer scanned for stored trouble codes to see it that gives you any hints. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Okay I got two codes. P2251: Oxygen Sensor Reference Ground Circuit Open Bank 1 Sensor 1 P0304: Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected Does the O2 Sensor error make some sense for what I’m experiencing?

The 0/2 is a problem that needs to be resolved but it's not causing this issue. The misfire code however will give you the rough running and lack of power. That could be a weak or cracked coil. I would replace the spark plugs and at lest one coil although it would be a good idea to change all the coils to avoid further problems. As far as the 0/2 problem. That could be a problem with the wiring or the sensor itself is bad. Somebody would have to do some testing to determine which.
