Hello, I recently purchased a used 2007 Jeep Liberty Limited at 59,000 km. Last week I parked the Jeep at a coffee shop, ran in and when I returned to the car it wouldn't start. I had it towed to my house where my dad and I began trouble shooting. First off, we replaced the starter, and still nothing. When you turn the key all of the lights, radio, work. The engine will not turn over. We also tried two batteries and still nothing. Could it be that I just need a brand new battery? Any one have any idea what could be the problem? Thanks!

You're going to have to follow a wiring diagram and test the circuit. If you would like a diagram tell me whether it's auto or manual trans and what engine it has. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the quick response! It is an automatic, 3.7 L engine

Since the vehicle is new to you, I would pull the hush panel to get a good look at everything under the column & make sure there isn't an aftermarket alarm installed. Look for wires secured with zip ties & butt connecters, a hanging or ziptied module.... If you are familiar with wiring diagrams, then you're good to go with what HT posted... If you need a little interpretation, let us know.... Just a thought, turn the lights onto park, try to start, then all the way on, try to start, Hold the high beams on, try to start. Lock & unlock with the key & try to start....

I tried turning the lights/high beams on while starting, and also the locks, and still nothing. Thanks for the suggestion, though. And as far as the circuit diagram goes, I don't understand exactly how it works. But I know that the relays are working correctly. Thanks

And also, there isn't an after market security system installed.

The windshield whiper relay and the starter relay are the same, so I switched them - and the whipers work.

Swapping relays is always a good quick check, not 100% but it looks like it's ok.... The next step would be to see what circuit is giving you the trouble..... If you look at the starter relay in the 2nd diagram HT posted you will see #s 30 & 86 should have 12v on them, get a voltmeter or test light & with KOEO (key on) check those terminals for power. Since you've done starter work, I'd want to get a fused jumper wire & run power from #30 to #87 for a second to make sure the starter does crank. Be 100% positive of the terminal before doing this..300% positive... DO NOT JUMP 12V TO #85!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you aren't totally sure, go down to the starter & jump the small gauge wire there, just to make sure the starter does crank. For the last terminal, #85, get a test light & hook the end to batt +, touch any metal area & make sure the light comes on, probe #85 & have some one turn the switch to start, the light should come on, if it doesn't, that is the circuit with the problem, this means the PCM isn't grounding the starter relay, for what ever reason and you will need to go from there.....

i was able to look at it again today, but it's still raining pretty hard. Anyway, there is power going to the maxi fuse but there is no power going to the mini fuse. Is the starter relay before or after the mini fuse?

I would need a fuse # to know exactly which fuse we are talking about... If you look at the starter relay in diagram #2 you will see 2 fuses feeding the relay. A 15a & 40a. The 40a is for the load side of the relay (solenoid). With no power to this terminal, the vehicle won't crank. If you jump 12v to that fuse and the vehicle cranks, everything else in the circuit is ok and you just need to trace down the power problem...(a fused jumper would be good, in case we are dealing with a short) Neither side of the fuse has power or just one side has power? Just a quick note. I think I misread the original post. If the 15a fuse is the one with no power, that is the control side. If you look at diagram #1, you will see that ign sw feeds this fuse.....No power to that fuse & you would start at the ign sw...... ( I know what I would do if this was my car.........but this isn't my car.......)

Yes it's the 15a. How will I know if the ignition switch isn't good?
