2007 Tahoe Front End Noise Sign In

I have a 2007 Tahoe with 100K miles and just started getting a front end noise on deceleration. It doesn't matter if breaks are applied or not but once it slows to around 30 mph it will get a clanking noise all the way till around 15 mph then quits. Sometimes it's accompanied by a loud pop noise like you threw a rock out of your tires before it starts the clanking. This only happens on deceleration and when it reaches 30 mph till 15 mph. It also will not do it right off the bat when you get in it unless it has been driven within the last 15 minutes or so. You normally have to drive it at highway speeds for about 20 minutes before it will start making the noise. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is it 2WD or 4WD?

Generic check for a noise of the sort.
Wheels tightened properly? Wheel trip parts if any loose or not? Stabilizer pin broken, can see those. Any recent work or incidents that might be in the mix?

Could be a front C/V joint. It really needs to be inspected b a professional.

Tom:

Only thing that has been done to it is oil change recently. No recent maintenance that I could tie the noise back to. Rides smooth as ever and nothing else noticeable other than the clunking noise from 30-15 on deceleration. I have been over, under, around you name it and nothing is noticeably loose. Appreciate you taking the time to post

Hammer Time:

I have had it to two Chevy dealerships with GM Certified Techs. All scratch their heads and say they have never heard it before and everything from the outside looks fine. The last one I took it to wants to start tearing off valve covers etc. and dig into it to "see" if they could find something. He said when they were scoping it they couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from because it seemed to "bounce around".

The dealership examined the car and couldn't determine the cause and you think you are going to find the answer online from someone that doesn't even get to hear the noise?

If you put the transmission into neutral during the clanking what happens? If your on decel and you turn the ignition off while it is clanking what happens? Be careful with ignition turning off because you'll lose power steering. Make sure the road is deserted.

What interests me is that is happens on decel only from 30-15 mph. Some noises are hard to figure out even for experienced techs.

Hammer Time:

Done it before. Believe it or not, here are people on forums that have run into the same problem and yes just through my description can point me in the right direction. Previous issue a dealership couldn't figure out and I found out through an online forum was a drive line problem. Described it and the guy told me the exact thing to look at and try and boom, problem solved. So yes I think I can possible figure out my problem through a forum.

Have a good day, God Bless!

Discretesignals:

I have not tried either one of those and I don't believe either one of the dealerships did either. Both places said the same thing as you in that it puzzled them that it wasn't constant and only at that speed interval on deceleration. By no means am I discrediting the techs as I am aware noises can be hard to figure out. Ill take it down a back road tomorrow and see if I get the noise if I put it in neutral or shut it off.

Re: 2007 Tahoe Front End Noise Sign In

Update:

Got it in to another mechanic who may have found the problem. It lies in the fuel economy system that shuts down cylinders. He said they narrowed it down to the #1 Cylinder and when they had the computer hooked up to it that could turn on and off the system, they could make it stop by turning it off. They said it started right after it would shut down #1 and stopped when it kicked back in and went back to V8. After some research they said they found a couple threads in their computer system of forums that pointed to the solenoid that kicks the system in and out. Ill keep ya posted if this fixes the problem and fingers crossed they don't find anything wrong with the cylinder when they get in to replace the solenoid assembly.

Re: 2007 Tahoe Front End Noise Sign In

Griffy - seems like you have some hands on help now. Just know it's all confusing to say "FRONT END NOISE" which means to mechanics suspension and steering parts not how an engine is running so off on the wrong track from the get go with this.

I don't know how to do better than a tech checking it out in person as is happening now. Let them do their thing is my suggestion now,

T
