I just got a 1971 Super Beetle and I'm in the process of ironing out the few quirks it has. One of these I am stuck on, the manual wind-down window on the drivers side. It winds up and down fine, until you get the very top when it wont wind up the last 5cm or so. As you turn the crank it clicks over and over like the teeth just are not grabbing the mechanism enough to turn it. I had removed the door panel anyway to add sound-deadening to the door frame, has a fiddle around with the hidden crank mechanism from behind but it's impossible to see what you're doing. Any ideas? Cheers.

You are probably going to find a tooth or two missing on the window regulator. Assuming the window crank 'teeth' are intact on both the handle and the regulator. It's not that difficult to remove the regulator for inspection and lubrication if that's all that's needed. You may want to make sure there is a replacement regulator available, just in case.
