Tongue Picked up a used pickup cant get it running right. Mechanic with medium skills here. Throttle body set up the truck is an 88 4X4 stepside. Previous owner did an engine swap. Has new EGR and gasket, new idle control valve, new throttle body base gasket, new tps, new new new all over it. Engine is occilating idle up and down up and down then stalls. Does not always throw a code to initiate check engine light. Good fuel pressure, I give up !

Does that mean that it IS setting a code sometimes?

What is the code number?

Maybe check the basics, as in ignition timing and minimum base idle; both of these need to be set correctly because the ECM (computer) relies on these static setting to be there.

For ignition timing; run engine until up to operating temp and turn engine off; disconnect the EST by-pass. The EST by-pass is a tan/black single wire found close to the distributor or under the right side relay centre cover or possibly behind the bottom of the glove box. Once you find this wire and disconnect it (it’s an in-line connector) restart the engine allow it to stabilize and then set the timing to TDC (0 degrees)

Base Idle; again allow the engine to come up to operating temperature and then turn engine off. Jumper terminals A & B of the Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL) connector, the thing you would plug a scanner into. Terminals A & B are the top two terminals to the right side of the connector. Turn the ignition switch to the run position but do not start the engine; the check engine light should begin to flash a code 12, if you’re in the proper terminals. Wait 30 seconds while the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor pintle seats itself. Leave the ignition on and unplug the IAC motor, now turn the ignition off and unplug the ALDL A & B jumper. Start the engine and adjust the idle stop screw of the TBI unit to 5-600 RPM. Turn the engine off; reconnect the IAC motor and then restart the engine. The thing will act a little goofy until the ECM relearns idle motor counts; you may even need to take the truck for a ride above 40 mph before it will relearn.
