You can get the check engine light to flash codes by jumping the diagnostic connector as shown.

Not likely. That is the parking brake lever in the picture.

Dusto: What is wrong that you want codes in the first place? '91 wasn't very comprehensive with info with codes IMO with anything and I to have no idea why an oil light blinks also?

A blinking oil light?
Does it blink all the time?
Or does it just blink while brakeing or taking off from a stop, or going around a corner?
Did you check your oil level?
The oil pressure switch could be bad or just have a bad connection.
Hope this helped.

Quote from Dusto">>just got this van and wanna make sure it is nothing that's going to blow out on the road i really just wanna check everything over but it does seem ok right now<<"

I suggest stop if all is well as you can't predict by a car's computer from '91 if something is going to go wrong. Hit the wrong pins and you make a problem you didn't have! Just maintain it, check fluids, and the normal things if nothing is wrong with it now,

Re: 91 toyota need to read codes Sign In

Maybe at some point between 91 and now some had the dash cluster out of and and has the bulb socket for the CEL on the Oil pressure lights place.
So it might actually be the CEL but it's show Oil pressure cause it's in the wronge place, I know it sounds odd but stranger things have happened.
Unhook the oil pressure switch and see if another light besides the oil light comes on, if so then the bulb is in the wrong place.

Re: 91 toyota need to read codes Sign In

If a mistake like that happened it would mess up. Most cars they all light up with key on engine off and others while cranking as a bulb check then all should go out.

Dash having been out isn't necessarily unusual for the age of it. A couple repairs like even a heater core could require that - dunno myself car by car just that some you must.

I'm not sure if unplugging or grounding an oil pressure switch will defeat it or make it stay on but it's worth a test and get them back where they belong. If just a low pressure, usually red warning those mean biz and a problem lurks that mean shut down right now or could be game over for the engine fast - seconds if it has no oil pressure.

Now tons of vehicles say "check oil" and folks for decades on end when they were just "idiot" lights thought it meant time to check the oil when I get around to it!

An idiot oil light will come on if low enough on oil or say below 15-20 psi of oil pressure and of course if there isn't enough or any it can't make pressure.

They should have designed a shock thru the seat instead - laugh! Well for me anyway as I don't scan gauges or lights unless they are really well placed and some aren't.

IDK about finding the right spot. Try you trick and see. That or take oil pressure switch right out and properly plug the hole of course and see which one glows while attached to the oil pressure switch which may need threads grounded for something like that.

Good luck with the fix and again if it's running well and no lights are on I wouldn't look try to check for codes "just because" type of thing. If it ain't broke - don't fix it would apply,

T
