92 Chevy Caprice fan/belt issue Sign In

Was driving home the other day and the power steering went out, battery light came on, and engine started getting really hot. The accessory drive belt (serpentine belt) had fallen off one of the pulleys, so I got it put back on.

Now with the belt back on, I started the car, it sounded fine at first. Then as I started to back it down the driveway, it started making an awful kachunking sound. Opened the hood and found that the fan is hitting its casing, which is causing the belt to slip off track on the pulley that moves the fan.

Any notions on what I can check to get this straightened out?

A strong maybe is water pump driving fan is so loose it's throwing the belt. Check for wobble, engine off. Should be almost none. that and motor mounts can allow too much engine motion so fan can touch should. Take belt off and spin all pulleys checking for problems and make sure any self tensioner is within range of self adjusting the belt. Fan touching suggests motor and even trans mount(s) allowing too much motion of them among the possibilities. If fan is damaged it should be replaced,

Took a closer look and it appears the pulley that hooks to the fan isn't properly secured to the water pump (the pulley slides freely about a half inch around the water pump, which lets the fan slip down enough to touch the lower casing. I'm guessing the water pump needs to be replaced, but I don't have the tools to unbolt the fan from the pulley (since the pulley rotates freely, I can't get enough leverage on the bolts). At this point, I think I'm going to take it to a mechanic.

I'm good at guessing wrong but this does seem like a water pump issue. Look and feel as there's also (I think) a fan clutch used in most of these that can wobble or go bad but shouldn't allow the pulley of the water pump to be loose. If water pump is at fault I do suggest a new fan clutch along with the job and any hoses while there,

Use two 1/2" (or two 13mm or one 1/2" & one 13mm) wrenches. Put one on each bolt and pry. One of them is going to come loose. after you get 3 of them loose, run one almost all the way out & wedge a screwdriver inbetween the bolt and shaft to hold it to break the last one loose.....BTDT Tongue
