Maybe Im nutz-but-my brakes feel a whole lot mushier than they use to. Recently had car serviced for an overheating issue. At same time: complete tune-up, brakes checked-rotors and drums turned, rear wheel cylinders replaced, a couple hoses replaced and brake system bled, new tires put on. OK-The brakes felt good after all this- after about a month-brakes turned to mush-checked master cylinder-barely visible fluid level. Put in fluid-no change. Took car back to mech.-had master cylinder replaced today-bled system. BRAKES STILL FEEL LIKE MUSH. Almost go to the floor. I guess the mech test drove the car and felt all was well. Am I missing something??? Is there some booster-thingy on my brakes that needs look at??? HELP!

Best I can guess it still had air in the system even though you said it was bleed out. That or the master cyl. has a problem even it new. New brakes normally dont feel perfect right away but not as bad as you said. Some can take a while for break in but still work. Foot too close to the floor is a problem that needs attention. T

Thanks, Tom, for your response. With the engine not running, the brake pedal goes down really low. If I pump the brake once-the pedal is high and stiff-like I thot it should be! With the engine running-the pedal is very low and pumping doen not bring it up. Does this tell you anything?

Just know that with the engine off you only get one or two pumps with power assist and then you are on your own. Pedal would feel firmer without power assist. The most common reasons for your problem are poorly adjusted rear drum brakes, air in the system and or a bad master cylinder. Must say I've never have one. If drum brakes in the back they will self adjust by backing up and braking hard if the star adjusters are working. If you have all four discs they are self adjusting then we are back to air in the system or a bad part. T
