two things come to mind, each as likely as the other. Either your master cylinder has a plastic reservoir and a plug in for a low fluid level sensor which is bad, or your e-brake pedal is slightly applied. Pull the e-brake release with one hand while pulling up one the pedal with the other and see if the light goes off. If so, you have found the gremlin. Otherwise, unplug the electrical connector at the master and see if the light goes off. If so, and the level of fluid in the master is within spec, its the sensor you unplugged at fault. This is assuming that all 4 brakes are functioning as they should of course.

park break is fine that was the first thing i checked seeing as how i do occasionally use it and no there is no plug on the master cylinder or on the plastic tanks there is one on the proportioning valve that does not change the status of light whether it is plugged in or not it also feels like only my front brakes are working despite all the rear brake componets checking out ok no leaks in the wheel cylinders and no unacceptable wear on the shoes and drums though when i bled the rears brakes i did not get the usual blast of brake fluid it was much more of a trickle

Take a large screwdriver and rap the side of the master cylinder reservoir with the handle a few times and see if the light goes off. It's very common for the float to stick at the bottom of the reservoir when it went dry during the repair and the flotation isn't enough to dislodge it from the gunk. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

there is no float and it was just fine for a while other than not having rear brakes the lines from the master were plugged and the resovoir didnt go empty any idea what the little black box i described is that got disconnected and then put back in same time and thats about when this problem started but it also makes it feel like i now have rear brakes

hey this is pretty helpful except that one i dont have antilock breaks 2 i already tried the park brake check and disconnect of the switch and 3 the locations of the components to check are not listed like that in a haynes manual and i cant afford all data at the moment if you could post the diagram with the locations and numbers it would be a big help but other than that is there anything else that could cause this kind of a problem

I have given you the factory diagnostic procedure for your problem. If you can't figure it out from that, head to the shop.

I have given you a procedure that systematically eliminates all possible causes. So, did you unplug both of those switches as the test instructed? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

c 163 so long as thats the single plug on the propotioning valve then yes i unplugged both as the diagnostic flow chart instructed and still nothing the light remained on hence my frustration its the only vehicle i have and i cant afford to take it back to the shop for a third time i know its a long shot to ask but no one has answered me about the little black box that is mounted above the battery that had been disconnected could that maybe have something to do with it something like a secondary computer for the braking system that got screwed up and would some pictures help so you can see what im seeing and talking about

Are you talking about a flat module mounted vertically? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That is the ABS module you said your truck didn't have. Your truck has rear wheel only ABS and it's storing a code. That's why your light is on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

not mounted vertical horizontal and its about 4 in wide 7 in long and about 3/4 in thick and if this is the problem how would i go about retrieving said code and or deleting it all toghether and how does rear wheel only abs work cause im used to seeing the big ugly block that controls the pressure and pulses it but where is that on my van i have now should i use flash diagnostics or pull out my obd 1 scanner

Trouble codes can be accessed by connecting a TECH 1 scan tool or by manually grounding the ALDL connector. To manually ground the ALDL connector, connect a jumper wire between terminals A and H and observe the flashes of the brake warning lamp. Note the following when performing the Diagnostic Circuit Check to access trouble codes. - When the terminals are jumped, count the number of short flashes starting from the initial long flash and including the long flash in the count.
- The count sequence will repeat as long as the ALDL connector terminals are jumped with the ignition on.
- Sometimes the first count sequence will be short. However, subsequent counts will be accurate.
- If more than one failure has occurred, only the first recognized failure code will be stored and flashed by the ECU.
- After determining the stored failure code, perform steps indicated by the diagnostic circuit check and follow the indicated failure code chart. After performing all indicated repairs, road test vehicle to check system operation, then recheck system for stored trouble codes.
This picture is for a Blazer but it shows the module ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

My 91 vandura has same light on but it does go off after a while I'm thinking there is a burr on emergency brake cable inside drum and its sticking. Its self adjusting rear brakes so the self adjusting mechanism (it looks like a star or a spur from a boot) is sticking or cable itself but let me know if u fix it and what the problem is
