92 mazda 323 maf question please

92 mazda 323 maf question please Sign In

the 92 mazda 323 with 220,000 miles has had a rough year, last year we had stalling related to over heating but the temp gauge did not register high heat. there was a pressurization issue in the radiator that caused infrequent down by the side of the road time and it was heck to pinpoint the problem. a local shop did a tune up , replaced the distibuter, and fuel filter. we had hopes for the radiator issue but it was not the end. a while back i came across a recomendation to check the maf. i cleaned it and the car ran well for months. realise please i am nervous about this car. the cooling fan is not activating by the thermo sensor, we have the ac button on to keep it running. after some long driving last week we had all the symptoms of over heating, and i noticed the ac switch had been shut off. the stalling recurred and i repeated that which had worked previously. , also replacing the thermostat, coolant sensor in the front of the engine block and the fan sender element in the thermostat housing. these did not resume controle of the coolant fan nor reflect anything but optimal engine temp on the dashboard dial. i put the ac swith back to on and cleaned the thermo sensor. again! now it will not run at all, where as it was limping around previously.

my problem and question:
the mazda cranks and will not fire, unless i disconnect the maf. THEN the mazda cranks and fires normally but will sputter out in thirty seconds or so. i have ordered a used maf and it will arrive soon in the mail. does this sound reasonable or should i be looking elswhere for my next fix? if it is a bad maf ,would i have diagnosed it by the disconnect?

IMO, by age and miles this is open to many possible problems and you are tossing parts at random it seems. If you expect to continue with this car after an overheat that probably by some of your observations needs a head gasket get it diagnosed professionally and you can still do the work if you want,

thank you. that is good advice. i have been warned about the head gasket, if i can get it to run i will get a compression test,tom.

Just know head gaskets can fail in more than just typical coolant in oil or smoke out exhaust. Overheats the #1 cause. They can plain drip coolant out to ground, put pressure of combustion gasses in cooling system which behaves like low coolant level quickly and pressures would sometimes build up to the caps limits quickly, not just from expansion of warming up normally.

If that is determined to be the problem - do send head out to machine shop for either repair or to verify it's ok or that it's NG so you don't waste time with it if so,
