'94 Buick Regal stalls
|

I received a 1994 Buick Regal Custom a few months ago with roughly 150,000 miles on it. Since then it has been nothing but trouble.
About a month after purchase the vehicle began to stall when coasting, or breaking. While decelerating the RPMs along with the Oil gauge dips dramatically and once it hits red the car dies. The Air blower, radio, and everything remains on other than the engine cutting. The car does not buck or make any noise when this happens. The check engine light does not come on beforehand, once the car is stalled the check engine light will pop on as well as the "Check Gauges" light. I can shift the car and restart it with no hesitation, when done the check gauges light is no longer on, nor is the check engine (although on some occasions it will remain lit until the second start post-stall) Between the time of now and the problem beginning the fuel sender unit began leaking gasoline and was replaced. It appears since the replacement the stalling and bouncing of the gauges has occurred more frequently, including while idling (although it is possible that I have simply become more aware).
I have been doing some online research to which I have found similar problems posted to which people have suggested a bad Crankshaft position sensor. Most seem to agree with the for-mentioned however I have also read the suggestions of a bad fuel filter, bad EGR valve, or the Torque converter clutch could be staying engaged.
Due to my horrific lack of car knowledge, not wanting to be taken advantage of by mechanics, and the expensiveness of throwing random parts onto the vehicle I am looking for any ideas to what the problem could be, or if it could possible be one of the theories I found online to similar problems posted by other car owners.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Hmm, (forgive my questions, I enjoy learning). How would this relate to it stalling when the break pedal is pressed? So far it has never stalled due to idling alone, it has always been while slowing, stopping, or turning while using the brake.

Your break booster requires vacuum to operate if there is faulty IAC or air restriction it will stall.

I have a buick regal 94, 3800 with 150k with the SAME exact problem!
