94 chevrolet, need help! Sign In

Ok, I have a 94 chevrolet 1500 4,3L vort. I just recently changed the temp sensor(posted the old problem on here before) and it has ran fine for about a month, now its acting up again. I drove it home a few days ago and parked it, got up the next morning for work and when i tried cranking it, it cranked, idled for abt 15 seconds then died. i did this 8 times, giving it gas made it die quicker. I gave up, hitched a ride and when I got home it wouldnt even crank, for 2 days now it just turns over. pleeeasee help I have no idea what could be wrong!

Yep, if it's a Vortec, fuel pressure is the first thing to check. It needs over 55 PSI or it will not run.

newer fuel pump, new fuel filter. i took the line off the fuel filter and turned the key so it would shoot through the filter, and it poured out, but it wasnt shooting a stream. how do I check the fuel pressure?

There is a service port on the line at the rear of the engine.

If you have pressure and it dosent crank be sure the injectors are spraying fuel out if so then you need to start with the module..

No Alien, this is a Vortec. You can't see the injectors. They are under the manifold. The fuel pressure is critical on this engine so get a pressure reading before doing anything else.

That was service port
How about a fuel pressure gauge...........
It just threads onto the fitting.

Okay, today I had a friend look at it (he used to be a mech.) and he tried cranking. It made a loud backfire and he says timing. Is he right?

possibly but like HT has said check the fuel pressure. 1. its cheaper to check than timing. 2. its easier to check than timing. 3 its cheaper to fix than timing. 4. we cant know if it is or is not timing without being there. you need to check the fuel pressure first and personally i dont think it sounds like timing not from what youve said anyway. when you say it turns and turns you need to find out what is mising spark or fuel. if you have both then that would point to timing. but you need to confirm you have both before you suspect the timing.

No, on this model you need to know what the fuel pressure is before moving on due to the system & how critical minimum pressure is....

Personally I have to use a gauge, I'm not good enough to be able to tell low fuel pressure by ear..........yet......

FWIW. In the diag world today, when someone comes in requesting "just the timing set", this is a huge red flag that they have a problem and no idea what it is....(unless they just fail smog due to a timing issue)

alright, Im bringing it to my friends school tomorrow. there gonna check timing anf fuel pressure, i know i have spark. when it turns over it seems faster than normal, and it backfires every few seconds. but pressure is the first thing ill get them to check.
