I started my car today, it kind of shuddered & died. Started right back up, but the "charge battery" light came on, power steering sure didn't work. I made it to the grocery store, it started right back up again, the battery light was still on; so I thought, I'll drive a bit and see if it charges. Well, I drove maybe 5 mins. and the temp light came on, the temp gauge was all the way to HOT and beyond! Made it home, shut it off, walked away. So...is it just the battery needs charged or replaced (it's maybe 4 yrs. old or so) or do you think it's more than that??? Hoping for the best....Linda

Did you look at anything but the indicator lights? With the power steering and temperature gauge as stated check to see if the drive belt is okay. It could be broken or extremely loose. There may be only one belt driving the alternator, the power steering pump, the water pump, the air conditioner, and power brakes. If the belt is bad it could and would affect all the units it is connected to via a pulley. That would be where I'd start looking.

Your car may have thrown a belt in your car. There are numerous belts that run under the hood, a lot of the time the belt that spins the fan is attached to the alternater pulley. This would explain why you "Charge light" came on AND your car over heated. If you pop the hood, have a look for your alternater. If you can see the pulley with no belt on it, then that is what happened. Or, if you cant see you alternator clearly, look for the fan right behind your radiator, follow it back until you see its drive pulley. Is there belts on either one? This may also effect the power steering belt depending on your vehicle. This should be a quick fix and not expensive. Let me know how you go.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I tried to open the hood to see what I could see, but the interior hood latch won't work now! I'm taking the car in Tuesday morning for repair, praying it won't cost more than $140, since that's all I have. I'll let you know the final verdict and cost.....Linda

Update on my car: I took it to the mechanic's today, it was a belt and tentioner--whatever that is, I know very little..VERY LITTLE..about cars!--it cost a total of around $180 including labor. More than I hoped for, but as car repairs go, I guess not too bad. Thanks to all who answered my cry for help, I really appreciate it! I'll be back with more questions, I'm sure...still lots wrong with my beloved car, but at least it's drivable now, everything else is stuff that can be put off. You're all the best!!! Linda
