BlushOops, My first posting of this went to wrong discussion board.
I have a 5 speed '95 Jeep Wrangler with shifting issues. Nott only does it not like to go into first gear if you have stopped before putting into gear, but it also grinds each gear except 5th. If I press the clutch and allow the RPM's to slow, I can put it into 3rd and 4th fairly easily without too much grinding but to gear down, there is no way for it to not grind unless you should go into 2nd and choose 3rd instead (RPM's are all an all time low).
QUESTION: Do I need a new gear box and/or clutch or could just replacing the clutch give some relief? or am I missing something else?

Re: '95 Jeep Wrangler Sign In

Does this vehicle have an hydraulic clutch - like using a master cylinder and brakel lines to disengage clutch? If so make sure fluid is full - then find the leak or defective Master or Slave or hose, to that. The clutch won't disengage if these items aren't working properly, and shifting will be difficult to near impossible with the grinding that you mentioned. Try in a safe place starting the veh in first gear, clutch to floor, and see if it wants to go - if so the hydraulic linkage is probably your trouble,

Re: '95 Jeep Wrangler Sign In

Was searching the net looking for info regarding other problems I'm having with my '95 wrangler. Quite a few years back I had the same problem you are having. It occured after I put 31" tires on my vehicle. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced the syncronizers. It wasn't cheap, but it resolved the problem. Not sure if the syncs where the problem or if I got duped, either way, its where you might want to start. Also, not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but, since adding the larger tires, my 5th gear has stopped working. The guys who fixed my trans replaced a retainer ring twice but it keeps breaking. I've managed to get by with no overdrive.

Hope this info helps.
