I have a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis, and the speedometer , and odometer both stopped working.
I took off dash cluster to find NO cable connection. I found sensor on transmission, and replaced it with new one, but it still
does not work. Can the new sensor be defective? Is there a certain way to slide the green gear part in?
Wher does the other end of speedometer cable connect to? Could it have fallen out?

Instrument Cluster (Analog) (Part 1 Of 7) Your speedometer doesn't use a cable. They did away with that a long time ago. It uses a Hall Effect sensor that generates an AC pulse. You need to find out if it is getting power to the right places. From there you can determine if you have a bad instrument cluster or a wiring problem.

I picked up another cluster at the junk yard, and installed it today, but the speedomter, and odometer both still don't work.
What can I checked next. Where do the wires connect at the other end ? In the car, dash?

Using a OHM meter check GY/BK for open. Check same circuit for short to ground. Check PK/O wire for proper grounding. If all that passes use a scope to test VSS output.. faster you got the higher the voltage should go.

GY/BK goes from cluster to the speed sensor and the just test for ground on the PK/O wire.. use a ohm meter from body ground to PK/O wire to see what the resistance is should be 0 or close to it.

I don't have any testers ,light meters,or fancy gadgets. I just want to replace the computer that
the speedometer sensor runs off. I didn't find it behind the kick panel on the passenger side.
Can someone tell me where it is, and maybe a photo of the unit. I am going up the junk yard to pick one up.
I don't want to be Eddy the Electrician. I want to replace the computer not repair. Thanks.

Then, what do you do after throwing $1000 worth of parts at it and you still have the same problem?

If I had that kind of money , I would but a newer car. I paid $19 for the new sensor, and 2 bucks for junk yard entrance
and $5 bucks for center cluster out of dash. The computer will cost me another $10 bucks.
I been going to this junk yard for over 35 years ,and get parts that go for $250 - $300 at dealers for $5 -$20 bucks at junk yard.
I want to replace , cause its so much easier then searching through lots of wires.
Where is computer located? Thanks

There is no computer that the VSS goes through.. It's wired right to the cluster, so the "computer" would be the cluster.

What happens if the problem is in the wiring? Are you going to call "Eddy the Electrician" ?

I changed the cluster already. I will follow the wires, and if no problem , then I will wait until I take the whole dash apart when I replace the heater core in 2 weeks. Thanks.

And you still won't know what is wrong with it using that approach.

You'll honestly be furter ahead to get it diag properly. It has to be wiring you've replaced the sensor and the cluter only thing left is 2 connectors and wires.

Need to figure out where in the circuit the fault is, check for pin drag(making sure pins are making proper contact) and fix the damage or run a overlay(new wire).

There are 2 connector pins on the back of the cluster. Would they both have something to do with the speedometer, or only one?

Does the VSS cable that connects to the transmission go under the hood, and through the firewall into the cluster.

I won't tell you again.

Stop duplicating questions in different threads. This thread has been dead for 3 years.
