Hello friends,

The other day I was driving down the freeway and I noticed my car was overheating. I immediately pulled over, got the car towed, and looked under the hood. I noticed a large amount of what I think is coolant over the hose leading from the radiator to the engine. My thought process is just a bad hose.

From there, I wanted to make sure it was the hose that was leaking so I waited for the car to cool, put some water in the radiator, and started the engine. I waited about 3 minutes with the car in idle, car was running fine (stable RPM), until the heat gauge got to about halfway between C and H and than the RPM fluctuated between 1500 and 500 every second. Fearful that I would damage the engine, I turned it off immediately.

I'm not the most car savvy person in the world but am I wrong in assuming it's a bad hose? Could these symptoms also be a bad thermostat? I really hope it's not a blown head gasket. Help? Thanks.

Alan

For any reason it overheated that's not good. Coolant could be all over the place so just blaming a hose if not obviously the problem would take pressure testing first to find external leaks anywhere coolant is.

You said you were not too car savvy so perhaps let the reason go to a shop to diagnose out. You did do the right thing to stop and get towed when it was noticed but stuff can happen anyway,

The cooling system needs to be pressure tested to find the leak.
