97 Mitsubishi Pajero 'chugging'

Hi, I have '97 Mitsubishi Pajero that's just started 'chugging' on acceleration. It mainly does it when going uphill - though that's not to say it doesn't do it at other times. Accelerating hard removes the problem but whe the speed drops back down the chugging comes back. If the chugging is really bad the steering wheel will vibrate badly. When it's idling it sounds like it's missing a beat or two, but still idles well enough. It had a service in January. Any ideas?
