97 Sunfire Steering and Shimmy Problem Sign In

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2.2 L/ 4 Cyl. engine with 136K miles. The wheel feels loose and hard to steer, almost to the point that its uncontrollable. For example, when making a turn I expect to turn the wheel to a certain point, but now I'm finding that I have to turn further than usual. When driving straight I'll have to turn the wheel more than usual to get a response.

Also the car shimmies slightly when driving straight, more on turns. The shimmy feels like its coming from the back. All of these symptoms are getting progressively worse.

Thank you for your help.

Sounds like you got a couple of things going on. The loose steering sound like bad rack & pinion bushings. The shimming, depending on what speeds it's happing at could be out of balance tires. If it's feeling uncontrollable, you should definately get it checked out.....

Thank you for your reply. I took it to a mechanic and found out that it was the ball joints.
