I have a 97 Sunfire that was dead when I went out to come home from work. I had a someone jump it and the car started up and was fine. I drove home and the car died right outside my house. The battery was dead. I test the battery in another car and found out that it was dead, so I bought a new battery. Now that the new battery is installed all the lights in the car come on on the dashboard, but when you try to start the car, nothing happens, it won't turn over. What could be the problem?

Check connections, charging system can be killed with a bad battery and alternator can fry trying to charge it,

checked all connections and now I can get the starter to kickin yet it sounds like a machine gun as it seems to be going a hundred miles an hour. What could be causing this now?

If it's starting and running like this there may be another problem. This sounds like a timing problem and is not consistant with the battery problem so I'm not sure. Is this a mechanical noise or backfiring type noise?

It sounds like someone tapping a piece of steel with a hammer really really fast.

Sounds like solonoid flutter which is caused when amps are too low for starter. Bet it would take a jump and work. Then you need to check the charging system which may be fried. A new battery may only be 40-50-% charged when sold new - AND - the failure to begin with could be a drain in the alternator making it a dead or very low battery right now.

Jump or better to charge the battery with an automatic charger that shuts off when done. Try that and if that works you still should check for a drain - hit back if it starts and we can discuss finding the drain if there,
