1997, Volkswagen, Jetta GT, 2.0L, 190,100 miles. I just recently bought this Jetta for a price i couldn't pass up well I'm having some issues with it and need some advice on what all i should do to repair it. I've never really worked on Volkswagen at all but i work on american vehicles on a regular basis. My car has 190,100 miles on it and the previous owner abandoned it and the company i work for impounded it so i got it for cheap. Well so far I've had to replace the left front steering knuckle, Driver Side Window, Coolant reservoir and ignition lock housing and cylinder as well as get new keys. So I haven't put but about $240 bucks into the car. I know it needs a tune up but i want to know where to start before taking on this project. The car has two problems that concern me which are, 1) Once the car reaches normal running temp. when coming to a stop and down shifting as well as taking off the car will make a weird sound and it will die and oil light will come on. Well my first thought is that its out of oil or low so i checked it and its completely full. Also when the car dies i can start it right back up and continue driving but it will do it again within a few more stops. 2) The car when cold runs like a champ but once its warm it cuts out when you mash the throttle like it hesitates which the tune up would most likely fix, also it has a problem back firing from time to time. It seems to be running rich as well. The only other real problems it has is a rear main seal leak which is just a matter of me getting the time to pull the transmission back and replace unless there is an easier way I'm open to suggestions please like i said I'm new to Volkswagen. Thanks for reading such a long post but I'm really excited to get this thing running the way it should be.

Check engine light on? If so, have it scanned and write down the numbers. If it needs a tune-up, that would a good place to start. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No Discrete it is not on I'm sorry I forgot to mention that. I have the snap on solus pro and I've hooked it up and haven't found anything to raise suspicion at all. I will start the tune up process as well and see what that possibly fixes. Where do you recommend I start? I'd like to replace one thing at a time so that I can check off what is causing the problem that way if it does it again I will know instead of having to replace everything. So knowing that where do think a good place to start would be from reading my previous post?

Tune-up = Plugs, wires, fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, PCV valve, etc. Have you inspected the plugs, wires, and inside the distributor? Probably wouldn't hurt to perform a compression test while you have to plugs out, just to see how well the compression is. Wouldn't be worth dumping a bunch of money into if you have a tired engine. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the timing cover back and take a look at the T belt. You sure don't want a worn out, dry rotted, oily T belt snapping on that engine. That would be a disaster.
