97 monte wont start in the cold. Sign In

Hey
I've been having problems with my 97 monte carlo. It has problems starting when it's cold out. I've had the starter, battery, ignition replaced, and it's not doing it. There is not a sound when I go to start it, so I was thinking starter or ignition, but I've had both replaced with no fix. Any ideas out there?

Check to see whether there is power getting to the starter motor’s solenoid’s “S” terminal.
The “S” terminal is the smaller purple wire, down at the starter.
Use a test light connected to a known good ground and the probe of the test light on the terminal.
With someone (helper) turning the key to the start position; the test light should light, while in the start position. Also the test light should light a bright as if you put the test light probe to the battery terminal; so take notice of that as well.
Use a test light for this not a voltmeter; a test light requires current flow to light the light; a voltmeter doesn’t require current flow to read potential available power (voltage). Unless we were doing voltage drop tests; but we won't go there right now.
If you want to know why that’s important; I’ll explain; if not that’s ok too.
Let us know what you find and we’ll go from there?

Dan.

Thanks Dan

Beleive it or not I believe that was tested, but will do again. I had the same problem this morning, and all I had to do to get the car started was rock it a couple times. Yes, I said rock it. I rocked it side to side a couple time and it started right up. What do you make of that? I'm thinking something was loose, but where do you start? This is driving me crazy.
I appreciate your thoughts - Thanks

What do I make of that?

Coincidence

English Thesaurus
- Accident
- Chance
- Luck
- Fluke
- Twist of fate
- Quirk
- Happenstance

I like Happenstance the best.
Next time it doesn’t start; don’t rock the car and do the tests. LOL
Sorry you asked. LOL

Dan.
