Hi There I have a 98 Toyota Corolla VE. Recently the check light came on and I was given the P0441 and P0446 codes. The 441 has been present for years because I have a leaky gas cap so thats not really relevant but worth mentioning. The 446 code came on about a week ago and was accompanied by a very rough idle in drive while stopped which became worse and is now rough in park and when taking off. The roughness goes away after getting going at speed. The idle is super rough and stumbles every few seconds. After doing some research and reading I have narrowed the issue down to the engine VSV, the purge valve VSV, the purge valve itself, the canister, or cracked tubing. Not sure where to go for there though and any help would be much appreciated as I would rather do the work myself than having a shop test everything and costing me a fortune! Wink

Re: 98 Corolla Rough Idle Sign In

OK: You don't know it was or is from a gas cap just evaporative emissions code the cap is a guess You've ignored probably just making it progressively worse now time top pay the Piper.
FYI - most gasoline has ethanol in it which absorbs moisture right out of the air if not sealed and used up. Corrosion and problem just follow the fuel becomes a desiccant (absorbs moisture/water) is wrecking you fuel system now about a 20 year old vehicle just makes it probably need more replaced to get it all intact. So called rubber components only last so long both time and faster with ethanol to degrade. Google or search that out you get a creamy salad dressing for fuel. Look at more than one they are full of misinformation as to adverse effects or is the stuff good for anything so careful what you believe out there.
Now that you've waited till it runs lousy that "fortune" to fix just got a lot more costly!
You should know now that it runs poorly, the sensors and converter will take a hit or be ruined most likely next if not already if you keep ignoring it.
I suggest you need help for a full diagnosis, estimate of costs and what else might have been harmed by a professional in person if you tended to that "years" ago you probably wouldn't be in this predicament. Sorry for bad news but ignoring warnings just makes things worse. They aren't there for amusement,

Disconnect the vacuum hose that goes from the purge vsv to the intake manifold. Cap off the vacuum port and see if your symptoms go away. If they don't, you have another issue causing your problem.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
