I have a98 Gmc Jimmy 4WD and Im having issues with it. When I place the battery cables on the battery it tries to start up. I have replaced igntion ignition wiring fuse box under hood starter is still good. Everytime I hook up the battery it tries to crank what could it be? I'm at my wits end with this. I've been trying to figure this out for the past 2 years....

Hi. First off you said you've been at this for 2 YEARS! Still unsolved or is this why you started working on it?

Why did the fuse box underhood need the wiring work and how was that fixed?

There will be more to do for just sitting around that long but if this wants to crank starter as said and key isn't accidentally somehow stuck to the "start" position there's power getting to the trigger wire at the starter or just maybe the starter drive (small gear that gets thrown at 'flywheel' when energized) is staying engaged meaning stuck there.

What do you want to do now after 2 years IMO too long to just let this sit unless somehow very carefully put away to work on and kept dry/garaged and prepped for that amount of time all sorts of strange issues can and will crop up. Wires if all rotted you fixed if so suggests some rough corrosion of vehicle.

IDK - do you want to at least take starter out or get to it and see if it's stuck? Just because it can crank doesn't tell me it's any good and with is out a good time to test if power is at trigger wire all the time and shouldn't be,

My brother was trying to get it to crank one day while I was gone and he melted the fuse box so had to replace it. I have had the vehicle tucked away in my garage so no weather gets to it.

I have replaced the starter ,the alternator, the, ignition, ignition wireset, plugs wires new battery solenoids I'm the fuse box. No key is stuck in the ignition.

Arrrr: Not sure where to begin with wires "melted" you didn't witness possibly cranking this thing WAY too long with damage found but must be more.

Again, trigger wire must be empowered by something either from fixing wires or still starter stuck. Why send it out to be checked since you could check it yourself and watch it work, throw its starter drive and see it retract if it can crank engine still it's body is still strong but the solenoid on it may be melted up somehow?

OK with dry storage but what about how stored? Was fuel drained or treated periodically not to go bad? Engine either oiled with plugs out and or run now and them and a list of things for a 2 year time out or endless problems from fuel plus lack of oil pressure for that long possible.

If you could get at least starter to behave could force it to run priming it or with starter fluid and maybe see what you've got a little more.

My problem with starter issue and these "melted" wires are a problem. I take it you fixed what you found but remains unknown how much else of wiring was damaged so at a loss with this much beyond what suggested.

With that I don't trust whatever test on starter was conclusive of its solenoid and drive working properly,

Re: 98 Gmc Jimmy 4wd Sign In

I meant I wil retest the starter myself
I just really can't bring myself to get rid of this vehicle I was my dads and ran fine till my brother worked on it . And started shooting flames thru the throttle body . After that the jimmy wanted to try to start once the battery was connected. Maybe in fighting a lost cause I don't know .

Disconnect the purple wire from the starter and see what happens.

I have not checked that but I will as soon as I can. I know it's a long time to keep trying with a vehicle but my dad gave me this vehicle
