98 cavalier computer/emissions question.

hello.... I just bought a 98 chevy cavalier and the day I bought it I had to have the starter replaced so they had to unhook the battery to fix it. Now I need to get it smogged and the emissions guy said because the battery was recently disconnected, the comp was reset and therefore will fail the smog test until I drive it until the computer does a self diagnostic. I drove over around 100 miles yesterday and the comp still hasn't gotten right, the smog guy said it's different for every car. Does anyone know how long this takes on a 98 cavalier? My 1-day driving pass from the dmv was for yesterday and now I have to drive it with no pass and no plates until this problem is corrected.

Damn - they have simple memory savers that would have prevented that! Can you still get a rejection test and have time? It's not just miles IMO but also a # of warm up cycles that will relearn and you won't know without getting the test. Here (MA) you would be able to take the test - fail without prejudice if all else was OK and get 30 days to take the test again (free) which I'm sure they don't like but you would be good to go and use the car. There's got to be a way and some grace for what happened or I'm shocked, T

The computer has run certain tests and needs certain conditions to run those tests i can the requirements shortly if noone else has posted them, but your car requires several drive cycles as well to run certain tests and that included turning the car off and on as well. well, i'm lucky because the smog guy will check whether the comp is ready without charging me so i don't have to pay each time, but i need to get this resolved so i can get registered. the warm up cycles part i didn't know about and i did the majority of driving yesterday without turning it off so maybe that will help me today. guess i just gotta keep driving! i hope if i get pulled over the cop will be understanding to my plight or maybe i need to go to the dmv (a two hour ordeal, at least) to get another day pass, if they'll give even me one. Thanks for the quick responses.

As Speed confirmed it's drive cycles so start it (in place even) run till warm. Shut it off and repeat. Steer it some, shift even just sitting I've gotten some to only run right again as some will need to relearn to stall and be a pest. Been ages since I always use a memory saver. I'd be scared to death to set off an alarm system or who knows what contraption can get upset and nobody remembers codes or passwords for crap? Good luck, T

Wow, thanks for the diagram....I will do just that. I went to the dmv and got another day pass so things should be good. My only question would be where it says decelerate with no brake, mine is a stick so do I downshift? Thanks everyone for the help.

If you can't get it to pass, find out which monitors aren't ready. Also make sure you have at least 15- 85% fuel level in the tank or the EVAP monitor won't ready. If the thermostat is stuck open or the engine isn't running at operating temperature, some of those monitors won't run. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
