Need some help please. I'm into my friends 98 mazda protege es 1.8l doing the water pump and timing belt. I'm running into 2 issues that are beating me up. I know I shouldn't be doing this without a shop but my friend is in desperation and I am good with engines. Problem #1 I hit was with the crankshaft sleeve, I can't get the retaining bolt loose. Problem #2 is I can't find timing marks on the head for the camshaft and there's multiple marks on the gear. If you can help with either of these problems I'd greatly appreciate it. Just putting it out there.

For the crank bolt you could try buying/renting an electric impact gun it might be strong enough to loosen the bolt? If that’s not feasible for you; you could remove the starter motor to gain access to the flywheel gear and then use some form of bar to jam the ring gear to the transmission case.
There’s a more hap hazard way that I seen people use and that would be a long breaker bar & socket placed on the crank bolt and positioned in a way that engaging the starter motor will loosen the bolt. I don’t suggest this; no doubt can you imagine the things that could go wrong doing this that way?

Here’s a diagram for the timing marks.

Dan.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I should've never taken this job on without access to my tools and with the car sitting in a driveway. I'm definitely gonna try to lock up the flywheel. I did make one mistake though and that's in not telling you that it was a single overhead cam. If you have a picture on those timing marks that would be the icing on the cake. Once again thank you. You're being a great help to me.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you; I was out of town.
Looking through the manuals that I have and they don’t list a signal cam 1.8 in 1998?
They do list a 1.5Lt and this is the alignment marks for that engine.
Anyone elsse here have a 1.8 SOHC diagram?

Dan.

I didn't see any 1.8 sohc for that year either Dan. About the only thing I could find was a 94 1.8 sohc. So either the year is way off or this was someone's project car.

My darn data base is acting up again so I can't load it right now but if I'll try to get it going later....
