99 Honda Passport Coolant Leak

1999 Honda Passport 3.2L V6 135,000 miles Had puddle of coolant under car after it sat for 3 days. Filled reservoir and it ran fine until the next weekend when it sat for a couple days, another puddle. If I run it every day there is no loss. It is not running hot and the engine performance feels the same. I checked the hoses and looked for a source but couldn't fine anything. Thanks in advance. Nick

If coolant is puddling under the vehicle,you should have the system pressure tested to verify source of leak... Autozone does rent a cooling system pressure tester but it doesn't come with all the adapters needed to fit all vehicles...it will fit the normal radiator top and it has one adapter...depends on your style.... if not ,it will be to your advantage to take it in to have it checked....since your getting a warning now,don't wait until it gets worse and possibly leaves you stranded somewhere.... just my opinion....

To add: Nick - this type of elusive leak is frequently the shaft seal of the waterpump. It may seal at certain temps and pressures. It also must seal slight vacuum where is could open up and have a leak time an quit leaking again. Try to find the water pump, have a mirror or whatever to look right at the seal and vent when you pressure up the system with a tester. If it still won't leak right inn front of you look for dried traces of anti-freeze from that area, T

Thanks guys. I never could find the source of the leak, just coolant all over the bottom of the front protion of the engine. I took it in and had the system pressurized, it held 15psi for a little over 30 minutes and finally a little coolant appeared where I had noticed it previously, it continued to hold the pressure so apparently it is a small leak? They could not confirm the exact source of the leak but suspect it is the water pump and recommend replacement. I am debating about changing it myself, but I have not really done much repair, only minor tune ups. It looks like I will have to take the front end apart and remove the timing belt just to access the water pump. My Dad lives across the state who would be a huge help but he won't be able to get down for a few more months. In your expert opinion, am I biting off more than I can chew. Another problem has creeped up. The gas gauge does not work properly. It reads empty after about a half a tank is consumed. It will jump back up to normal periodically but then it will go all the way down and begin flashing. Could the float be getting stuck? I also read that soemtimes the sending unit goes bad on these models. Thanks again!

It is recommended to replace the timing belt with the replacement of the water pump. ______________________________________________ It says water pump (likely problem with this car) is timing belt driven so as it says above it is a good time to do the belt also and would probably do the pump with a belt it tough enough to get at everything which it probably is. "Are you biting off more than you can chew?" Your call. Most of These are better for high end DIYers and may involve more tools than are at your side, T

YES........ I agree that this is one you may not want to get involved with. There is a special tool needed just to hold the pulley in order to remove the crankshaft bolt.. And that bolt is a son of a gun to remove...it has thread locker on it from the factory and takes a powerful impact to break it loose or a good bar with room needed for leverage..something you wont have by doing in the driveway.Believe me...Smart choice,leave this one to the pros... You will also need a pulley puller or gear puller to coax the center pulley off of the crankshaft, if you are lucky enough to get the bolt off (mentioned in previous post)
