99 chevy cavelier won't start

I have 99 chevy cavalier that is not starting. I installed a new starter and it cranks but won't run. What else could be the problem? It is a 2.2 engine.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out, you will know which system is having the problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Let me ask this, if I replaced the starter could that affect the anti theft system in the car?

No....... You really need to follow the chart HT posted if you want to be able to find the problem. I understand that it may be beyond someones tool & knowledge base but there really is no other way to trace the problem down....... HT will probably kick my azz for this but these are your choices......Get all the results he asked for & he WILL help you help yourself. If you can't complete all the tests, check all the fuses with a test light, if all is good & you want to gamble, throw a crank sensor at it. If it still doesn't start, you've done all you can. Take it in to be diagnosed, trust me, it will be way cheaper than blindly throwing parts at it....

ok. I understand that. My question then is this, I noticed when trying to start the car that the theft light is on and does not go off. I looked in the manuel and it says that if it does not go off that I need a code to put in so that I can reset the theft system in the car. On the ignition it has one of those buttons you have to push to turn it off. I know that all the lights come on when you initially turn the key on, but the theft light is the only one that does not go off after a few seconds.

I guess you neglected to mention the theft light when you asked your question. Were you saving that for a late surprise? Is it starting and stalling right out? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
