99 taurus gas gauge Sign In

The gas gauge on my mothers 99 taurus wagon is crazy.
The low fuel light comes on and the gauge read E when the tank still has 5gal left in it, I know this cause it has a 16gal tank and when she fills it up it takes 11gal when the light was on.
I hate to say but i've heard it could be the sending unit.
Any idea's?
Thanks

You heard correctly. You may also find it to just be an engineering flaw in the system too.

My input: Don't wait for car to tell you when to get fuel - fill it up and reset trip odometer and refill by miles. Neat tricky stuff will fail over time. Check oil manually and don't count on that foolishness either. That neat stuff can fail and does. Car will fail if not paid attention to,

Do you think it would be ok to replace the sending unit with one from a junkyard?
We don't have alot of money to work with.

Thanks again for your help!

It's a big gamble. The sulfur in the fuel deteriorates them and sitting around in a junkyard with stale fuel isn't a good thing. The float assembly is usually sold separately from the fuel pump and isn't that expensive.

I looked on autozone and they don't even carry it.
Do you happen to know a place that does?
Cause if it cheap enough I'll do the new one.

No, they won't. That's a dealer item.

OK, but I don't see how paying $100 for a bad one is any better.

Re: 99 taurus gas gauge Sign In

My local junkyard's price list says $17 bucks.
But getting it out in a junkyard is the hard part.
