ABS questions for 96 GMC pickup

When applying the brakes, the pedal feels spongy and it feels like I'm on ice with the ABS when I'm on dry pavement. Is this a quick fix or where do I start?

I guess the first place to start would be to inspect the entire brake system for fluid leaks,lining wear..etc...
Is the ABS light on/does it come on?..Have the system checked for trouble codes.
Does the red brake warning light come on?
What exactly happens,does the ABS system activate on dry pavement?..
