What's wrong and how can I fix it? Can I still drive it?

Re: AC compressor clicking, video inside Sign In

I hear the what I'll call thunking whether compressor is engaged or not so that noise is something else. The outer plate clicking on and off if what you mean is compressor engaging and disengaging - could be normal.

A/C compressor is really two things. 1. Just a pulley when disengaged using a bearing for that outer hub called a clutch and when engaged that bearing isn't involved and shaft of compressor with bushings/bearings is operating and can make assorted noises normal to warnings of problems.

Rapid cycling like that at certain temps and loads could be normal or pressures built up out of parameters and it shuts it down.

If more than I could tell by the video it may take a trained ear with temp/pressure observations up to evacuating system of refrigerant, charging to exact known weight of charge for more infomation. At the age plain leaks and low charge can cause that and is common. The fix if so may not be.

You need to know pressures, temps it's dealing with and engine RPMs to begin to know what is normal or not so far,

It's cycling on and off. It could be low on refrigerant or is could just be cool enough outside to lower the pressures that low. Some cycling is normal depending on outside temp and blower speed.
