Air ride malfunctioning... 94 Lincoln Mark VIII

Air ride malfunctioning... 94 Lincoln Mark VIII Sign In

94 Lincoln Mark VIII with 128,000 miles on it. Over all great condition.

The air shocks are full in the rear and all the way low in the front... so the car looks like a dragster: Propped up way to much in the rear, and dumped way too low in the front.


-How would I diagnose this problem? What could be a possible cause of this?


-Any advice will help, as I don't know much about Air Ride service.

You won't be pleased with the expense of this! Start with a check of underside sensors that would be on suspension parts sensing the height - duh. Hope you find something unplugged or simple broken part visually.

They make kits to defeat the whole system which would be my choice as it's just too costly for little true benefit. Your call,

I will check the sensors... is there anything else that could be causing this?

If an accumulator or pump went out in the front, would that cause the rear to be pushed way up like a low rider?

Basics not specifics but check as follows:

I think all four wheels are air ride adjustable and perhaps have NO real metal spring back up if air pressure doesn't hold.

It's possible for an air leak in front NOT to leak out back - in fact likely. Sensors are probably rods or a roundinsh thing directly on a spot that would be located on a spot where actual lower control arms (road) holds the wheel and compare it to the body height.

I'm hoping for you that one of those is just sending bad info for ride height. If the front is leaking air out you may have a very confused system and somehow it's trying to compensate with more air that ends up to rear air struts.

THIS CRAP IS A COSTLY NIGHTMARE! As much as $6,000 bucks worth of stuff involved for a fancy system to both adjust for load in the vehicle and lower overall height for less wind drag at speed. Real cool till something goes wrong. If not a simple fix now the wild majority of folks go for replacing the whole system for a plain strut set up with no more headaches or expenses like this can be. When I was searching for the pic found sites that cater to deleting this set up for something like 600 bucks for all four wheels and you end up with new struts!

I'll find that again if you want to consider that.

Just get look for something obvious for now and let me/us know how you wish to approach this.....

Of interest: I was with customer who wanted one new in 1993 MY and went along. I was shocked at the silence and performance over 100mph out of this car! Not my type or wishes but impressive. It's a VERY high tech road machine to be competition for the Euro high end sports cars. Still a nice regular driver without this feature IMO.
