Bleeding a master cylinder Sign In

The neighbor bought a new master cylinder, took it out of the box, mounted it in the car, filled it with fluid and now has almost no brake pedal.

"Instructions? What instructions...about bench bleeding? OH! Nah, I didn't read that stuff." He thought bleeding the lines would also bleed the master cylinder.

The question is: is it possible to bleed a master cylinder once it is in the car?

If so, what is the procedure?

Sure it is. It just makes it take longer. If it has ABS you could really make it hard though if you push air into that system.

Just disconnect both lines from the master, fill it up and have someone slowly pump the pedal up and down while you hold light pressure over the ports with your fingers so it will push air out but not draw any in. Once you start getting a steady stream out of all the ports, then quickly hook up the lines without letting the master go dry. It's a little messy but it will get the air out.
