I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra with 23,000 miles.
The brakes were fine until I had to have the rear shoes replaced after discovering during tire replacement that the right rear shoe linings had de-laminated.Unfortunately the shop was not competent(long story,but,tried to sell many unnecessary parts).Said they had trouble bleeding brakes.(Why bleeding was necessary during simple shoe replacement is unknown.)I had the brakes inspected by competent shop.They found no problems.Approx. 1 week and 200 mi. later the left front caliper and right rear drum began tightening up to the point of undriveability.The brake pedal became solid(unmoveable/high).After a couple of hours the car was driveable.The problem was diagnosed as air in system. I had the brake system flushed and bled as recommended.The brakes were OK for 4 days then the same problem returned 3 days later.The (ASE master) tech now thinks it may be the master cylinder but is not sure.I can find plenty of advice for soft pedal but little for hard pedal(booster is good).These are not ABS brakes.I thank you very much for any info.MB

You can try cracking the lines at the master cylinder while this is happening. If you get a burst of pressure, the master is faulty. If you get a trickle, then you could have a stuck prop valve (if vehicle is equipped) or even a collapsed metal line.
