Ok here is an update. I finally threw in the towel and had the car towed to the garage. So that is $117 for the battery and $55 for the tow. I get a call a few hours later and wait for it...there is nothing wrong with the battery. I installed it just fine the first time. The original battery was fine too, but it was five years old, so I guess it was time for a new one anyway. The problem was a blown fuse, yep, you read that right, a blown fuse. My mechanic admitted that he is not certain what caused it but suspects a short with the starter. He changed my oil, topped off fluids and charged me $30. He gave me a box of fuses and told me if it keeps happening, come on back. Not once did I ever think of checking the fuses. He told me always check the simple things first. Live and learn I guess.

That doesn't explain why you couldn't tighten the battery cable.

I know, I told my mechanic that I couldn't tighten the cable. He said "really? It looked fine to me and your car starts now, so the connection is good." I really don't understand it either, but the car starts now so I am not going to complain.

Did your mechanic tell you which fuse was blown?

I too don't understand the cable issue suddenly being all fine unless it welded itself or it's still messed up but just enough connection to work. I don't think this game is over yet,
