Do mechanics keep records of the cars they inspected? If so would they have vehicle information such as VIN number? Thanks for any help

If your referring to state mandated inspections, then yes there is a record. If you just talking about an independent garage, they all have different record keeping habits. Some document everything and some nothing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

So if it was the required PA inspection they would have records of that? And if so would they have it from as far back as the late 90's?

I couldn't say if they go that far back or not. You'd have to contact the state to find out if they keep records that far back. I bet Carfax would have that record also.

No, they would not be allowed to retain that info unless they can hack the records computer illegally.

I don't know what your trying to get at or find out here but the mechanics as employees have no right to any of this documentation. If your talking about a shop owner that operates a state inspection station, then yes, he likely does have records.

Ok heres what i am trying to do. My grandparents had a truck that they bought in 1984 and sold in 1999 and I am now trying to locate this truck. I know the shop where they always got it inspected and I was wondering if the shop would have any records of inspecting this truck. I am trying to obtain the VIN on this truck so I can try to locate it so that I can buy it.

Your not going to have much luck doing things that way, especially if you don't have the VIN because that is likely how they search their records. You may have better luck using the DMV. Having a tag number would help there.

Richard, my state ,FLORIDA, does not currently have emission testing so I cant say much on that. However I have had luck helping friends do the same thing .In Fla tags are handled by the tax accessors office . They have a web site that you can research their archives . also the county that i live in has records of some loans esp if they used the vehicle for collateral check your clerk of the court site .Also do a google for "vin search" and you will get a number of sites ,all people leave a paper trail. They may have been in a fender bender ,or had a traffic citation .Check the DMV site . Bear in mind some of these sites charge a small fee ,most will refund if they don't find anything .....GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
