I have a 2007 eclipse, base model. Does the key have a chip in it thT if missing will prevent it from starting? I only have one key and we lost it for a while, finally found it but it had been quite damaged. The remote part is destroyed and the electronics in it are missing, so it's just the shell.
The metal part is fine and fits in the car, and when I go to start it the car turns over, but won't start. If the car is turning over is it possible that the missing electronics won't let it start completely? Or should I look at other pieces as to why it might not start after sitting in the cold for a few weeks?

you will need to scan the PCM for codes....
But lets start basic- when you go to start -
does the Ck Eng Lgt come on @2 seconds then go out- what do you see
Is the security light on - same question come on then go out- what?
once we determine those we would then go to basic no start
ck fuel pressure
ck injector pulse
ck spark at several plugs
the results we would gaiin up to here would guide next step

Yes, the key does have a transponder in it so if you already know it's missing or damaged, get that resolved first. You can buy a new key but the dealer will have to register it to the car and they will need the car for that..

Key is definitely damaged. The electronics are missing, the plastic end is just a shell at this point. I did find this:

Is the process for programming a newer generation eclipse the same? Mine is a 2007? Would love to saw 50 dollars and not have to pay to have the remote programmed if I could donut myself.

A keyless entry remote has nothing at all to do with the immobilizer system.

It's a transponder key. I beleive it has to be programmed to work at all for my car and not just for the keyless entry.

I already warned you once that you can't post links here. This makes two.
That key is a combo of keyless entry transmitter and a transponder. You may be able to program the keyless entry but the dealer or a locksmith are about the only ones that can register the transponder to the car.
