Car locks up after 4 fixes! Sign In

Hi. Here's my problem,my daughter has a used Toyota Corolla CE(151,256 miles) she got off of Craigs List . Problem #1. The car needed brakes so, I had my mechanic put brakes on and two new axles, also a master cylinder. I drove the car after he fixed it(it sat over night). I went about 6 miles and the brakes stiffened up. It would not accelerate! Once I stopped the car, it would not move until about 30 minutes later. I took it back to the mechanic. He put a brake cylinder on the right brake. Drove the car and the same thing happened. He re-flushed the brakes! I drove it again and the same thing happened. So, I had the transmission done(thought that would solve the problem). Same thing happened! Transmission guy told me to bring it back but, I am flustered at this point! What is the real problem? One of my good friends told me it might be the drive shaft. He said that the rubber around the Universal joint might be gone or the the Universal joint might be the cause of the locking! Please help me! Please! This is for my daughter! :-(

I would like to clarify the issue........
The car starts OK - yes no?
What year is it?

Everything is fine - you drive it and it locks up ?
Still idles fine engine accelerates in Neutral?
JUST slows down - wont accelerate?
If you shift to neutral foot off brake - does it coast or feel like braking?

So I am getting the feeling that the brakes may be the issue.
Do you smell burnt brake
Are the wheels especially HOT esp a front wheel? just walk to each hold hand several inches away,

there are some possibilities BUT I would like to get some answers.

Long shot but happened on one for me. Master cylinder (your now new one) can't allow fluid to return be it defective, installed improperly or if adjustable too tight to push rod to it.

What happens is then can be fine cold and so much as some engine heat or using brakes normally and this can be fast expands brake fluid and it can't go back hence self applying the brakes all around but noticed in fronts first.

Trouble is by the time it's checked the problem doesn't exist again if that and cooled off. If pedal feels like little to no free play just sitting still even cold it's probably too tight for reasons mentioned.

**The ONE that did that was a recalled new unit and the centering hole in new master was NOT drilled deep enough to spec on a vehicle with no adjustment for rod to master. Pretty rare I would say and was elusive being fine cold.

Stuff happens and wouldn't be the first thing a tech would look for,

The car starts okay. The car is a 1998 Toyota corolla CE. Have not tried to put it in neutral yet. It drive for a couple of miles then I can feel the brake stiffen up . When I stop at a light and take my foot off of the brake, it won't coast. It stops accelerating. When it locks, it wont get in gear until it cools off

I would have someone check the fluid for contamination.

Oh gosh - hope this isn't fluid contaminated! You might see this in a swollen rubber seal under where you fill for brake fluid. Real oils if used will ruin all brake rubber it touches - huge issue if so.

Told not witnessed that if quick with a mistake that oil products will float on top of brake fluid but not if bled thru which it had to be in this case so no outside chance to just take out product PLUS you paid for this work so it's on that place IMO to find and fix.

You said it's been around and not found by several. If place and techs don't have this understood and drive or run it to witness it and all else just looks good it could be missed. When/if witnessed then the head scratching comes to find this and why.

? Trans issue?? IMO too early to blame much till this is solved,

seams llike an agreement- the BRAKE system...

As this is a 1998 -
when you try to start vehicle- The CEL (check engine light) and the ABS lights should come on then go off- yes no?
I am curious to see the answer.

The brake pedal hardening- definitely a place to start , and I would start at front - when it is acting up need to check for pressure at the calipers- just open bleeders looking for pressure on fluid...

A SWAG-
I suspect there are codes both the CEL P type and a ABS issue -
Why no one has scanned this vehicle after 4 visits is odd.
