Code Scanners Sign In

Hey Guys! I'm relatively new to the industry and brand new to this site and I was looking to get some opinions on a good code reader to purchase.

Some of the features I'm looking for are:

Necessary:
OBDII CODES (Generic & Manufacturer)
Transmission Codes
ABS Codes

It would be nice but not necessary to have:
EOBD - for european cars
View OBDII Live Data from sensors, etc.
OBDI (I'm not really sure about this one, since most vehicles I would be seeing would be '96 or newer)

I found one on Amazon, it looks pretty deceant to me, I was hoping for a second opinion from an expert or someone who has been in the field a while. The scanner I was looking at was an Equus 3160 Innova. It has all of the above features plus some more that I didn't list.

It also has IM readiness status lights, and says it comes with access to an online database that provides flow charts for the DTC's.

Has anyone out there hear of this model before and could provide any feedback from it?

Even if you haven't heard of that particular model, could you still recommend one?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks Again Hammer!

So does anybody know anything about that code reader I posted above? Or do any of you have one that you might be able to recommend to me?

This is just a generic OBD code reader designed for DIYer. Profession techs don't use stuff like that. It will give you some basic, generic info and that is fine for the back yard guy but the tools we use cost $8,000 and up.

Re: Code Scanners Sign In

Yeah I've seen some of those readers your talking about, theres a lot that get real manufacturer specific too, and some just for trans codes, etc.

I'm mainly just looking for a good start-up one. My current scanner can only pull engine codes and not ABS or Trans codes which is why I'm looking for a new one. Do you know of any that you might be able to recommend for this situation?

One of the features I thought was nice about the one listed above was that it said came with access to an online database that gave the flow charts for trying to resolve a DTC.

Re: Code Scanners Sign In

At my school we use the snap-on solus pro.
looks like this

heres a description.
The new SOLUS PRO Scanner from Snap-on Diagnostics was designed for extended battery life, high-speed performance and ergonomics. It delivers VIN-specific coverage for models from over 30 vehicle makes. Other features include:
• Provides trouble codes, data parameters and bi-directional tests.
• Fast-Track Troubleshooter has step-by-step instructions and live data readings.
• USB and mini USB ports for printing, input devices, flash drives and PC connectivity.
• OBD-II adapter and keys.
• Comes standard with domestic and Asian software, and all adapters required for 1996 and newer vehicles.

idk if HT would reccomend this or not but its a suggestion. gives basic codes and descriptions. ABS TRANS ENG Domestic/Euro live data stream test drive recording print outs etc.

Re: Code Scanners Sign In

I do recommend that as a good general scan tool and I own one but it also costs about $5000 compared to $150 on the unit he's looking at.

Re: Code Scanners Sign In

I don't necessarily have a low price range like the $150 one I posted. I DO want something that will work good for daily use.

I have seen that snap-on reader before but never was able to use it. $5,000 is a little high for me right now though.

I won't mind spending some money on this, I just want to make sure that if I do spend a pretty penny it would be well worth it, on a scanner that wouldn't let me down.

You can get pretty close to professional level by using PC based software like Auto Ingenuity. You supply the laptop and they supply the software, cables and adapters. Those system are around $1400.
