Deep water...

Hi. New member here. My daughter drove her 2011 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited Sport into a deep puddle on pavement at about 35 mph. She said a wall of water washed over the hood and perhaps over the roof. The engine was weak after that, and she drove it home, only able to achieve 20-30 mph.
I looked at the vehicle several hours later. Changed oil--no water. Air filter dry. No visible water in engine compartment. Plug wires run to a sealed distributor. Driving it initially, it would stall if you tried to accelerate rapidly. Over the course of 10 minutes of driving off and on it got a little better. Added Heet additive to fuel tank to absorb any moisture in combustion chambers. It eventually got to where I could drive at 60 mph if I nursed it, but if I opened up the throttle it would bog down (fuel mixture problem due to water?). Also, it seems to have particular trouble at shift points, yet it revs smoothly at 4,000 RPM. This morning she says it is worse again.
What did the water do, and what do I need to do?

ok lets go about this step by step - easy fast cheap things to start...
You will need to scan for codes, most auto parts stores will do this for free - copy down the codes and post them here someone will help.
Also try this - Turn the ignition switch on-off-on (just to 'On' but not to start) start with key off, turn on off on off on .... a series of alpha numeric codes SHOULD appear in odometer. Let us know.
you have done the basics - checked oil, checked air filter , now we are checking the computer for issues...
Are there any modifications to the jeep?

It's not part of it right now but do check transmission and gear cases too. Should be and older ones always had protection such that water couldn't easily get into where the gear cases vent some just a tiny mushroom thing this should have a hose to go up higher like a snorkel? Check. That and when running issues taken care of expect problems with brake calipers suddenly shocked if warm or hot can suck water in thru dust boots and problems again later down the road,

how did you check codes? Ideally a scanner is the only way.
running as bad as you say there must be an issue, hoping we do not have to trouble shoot each one by one- vacuum, fuel pressure, back pressure, MAF, MAP, etc

I checked codes with on the dash in the odometer spot. I am going to drop it at a mechanic tomorrow. I was hoping for a simple answer that I hadn't thought of. Thanks for the help.

So, what I did not see when I crawled around under the Jeep was that the fuel line was dislodged by the water jet. Mechanic said it was up against the muffler, and the heat was boiling off the gas. I guess when I nursed it, enough fuel got through, but with the throttle open, it was starved. Interesting finding.

! Glad it didn't break and blow up - never mind the vehicle! Yes it sure would/could "boil" fuel.
Long time now but still possible that was called "vapor lock" a hot day problem usually underhood lines got too hot as when parked for a while like you were out of gas type thing.
I'm surprised that Jeep didn't route fuel lines and tie them down out of this chance actually. IF they've been altered think about it.
All lines - return, brake, cooling lines should all be away from harm's way. Of course flying thru water at some speed nothing is going to take it.
I'd check for other items not in place now hearing that,
