Engine Fault

Hi, can anyone clue me into the possible problems i've got with my Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDi 03 plate. When I turn on the engine an engine fault light comes up on the dash, the car is able to drive, however not above 38 mph whereby the engine cuts out completely. Sometimes I can restart the engine immediately or would have to wait a few moments to restart the engine. I would take it to a Citroen garage however they charge a complete fortune, it would be better if I could get advice on any problems before hand. Anyone able to help? Cheers KKC

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired. Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
