Engine shuts off when put in gear

I have a 1991 Buick LeSabre Custom with a 3.6l V6. I just changed the water pump and now when I put the car in gear the engine will shut off. Can someone please let me know what I should do????/

Is this just an idle that won't maintain RPM or does it seem to immediate lock when put in gear?
