Explorer door lock/latch

I have a 1998 Explorer that has a drivers side door lock that is difficult to open. It looks like there is a spring in the latch mechanism that has broken. My question is on latch removal. It appears that the lock actuator rod cannot be removed from the latch while in the door, removal of the actuator requires drilling out a rivet. I'm hesitant to do irreversible damage if it's not the right thing to do! Has anyone done this repair? Can the actuator be reinstalled?

While it still works spray the daylights out of any parts to the latch with WD-40. Spray down at it with window down, back at it thru any port you can find. Next is panel off so you can really target the problem. If it needs a new latch they are generally doable. - T
