F-150 wierd problems 4x4 maybe? Sign In

I have just bought a 1987 ford f-150, I went to move it to my house today and i backed it up out of the drive way, it seemed fine, But when i started to move forward, it acted like the brakes were on. I put it into 2 wheel drive and unlocked the hubs, then went to go drive, but it would not move at all, it would just rev up, then i went to put it into park and it would crind and not let me get it into park. i turned off the truck put it into park, then locked the hubs and put it into 4x4 and it would move but still acted like the brakes were on, put it into part and it went in park just fine, any ideas on what might be the problem? and if you what should i do to fix it, i would like to fix it by myself, Dont think i can afford labor cost. thank you in advance for your time and replys.
Robert,
Alaska

on some older 4x4 trucks that showed that problem like yours is caused by loose or worn linkage between the transfer case and the shifter that shift's it into 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive so when you put it into 2 wheel drive it dose not move the lever on the transfer case all the way into 2 wheel position causing it to be in between 2 wheel and 4 wheel or 4 high and 4 low

would that cause it to acted like the brakes are on? cuz as soon as i let off the gas it stops fast and it wont barly move, or is that a differant problem in its self, like maybe the brakes are stuck?

i don't think it would cause it to act like the brakes are on it would just cause your grinding noise and also stop it from taking off very well.

If this truck has been sitting a while the rear brakes can sieze up and cause it to feel like the brakes are on. Take off the rear wheels and bang with a hammer on the drums til they free up. Bear in mind if its too siezed up and the drums are weak you may damage them doing it and have to replace them. But most all the time you can get them to work again. As to your other trouble, likely the linkage as mentioned. Try unhooking the linkage arm and moving the shifter on the transfer case yourself. Look at the bushings on the linkage rods as well. Most likely they are shot. If moving the transfer case arm on the case itself clears this up, you know where the trouble is and its a fairly easy job for a DIY.
