F150 starting problem Sign In

1994 F150
5.0 liter with 175K miles

When the transmission is in Park, the vehicle does not start. The starter does not turn over at all. I can hear a very faint electrical humming noise. If I put the transmission in Neutral, the vehicle starts easily. This issue started happening a few days ago. Prior to a few days ago, the truck always started on the first turn of the key. What is the problem? Starter relay? Starter?

That or sloppy Ford linkage. From years tons older than this many you had to hold shifter firmly in "P" or you just sat there. Those were the cars and the dang linkage thought you were somewhere between "P" and "R" and shouldn't start if so for real,
