FORD MONDEO BONNET WONT OPEN Sign In

2004 FORD MONDEO ZETEC 1.8 85,000MILES

HI FOLKS,
bought this car 2 weeks ago & checked over it head to toe, everything ,yes even seeing under the bonnet, but now the bonnet will not open all the time.
i put in the key turn it anti-clockwise & it clicks open the bonnet just slightly, then i turn the key clockwise(as im told in the manual)but it will not click fully open,so earlier on today my mate told me to pour hot water over lock & it worked the bonnet opened, great!
unfortunately since then it will not open again Frown i was told by the guy i bought it off that its due to the cold weather & i would not be the only mondeo owner to have this problem, which im a bit skeptical about!
could you tell me if this is a common problem & what can i do about it?
Or should i take it back to the guy i bought it off & tell him too fix it or give me my money back as if it is a problem it must have been an ongoing one & he would have known about it before selling it to me.

many thanks. A.

If it's just a case of the lock freezing up, over here the sell some sprays that will thaw a lock quickly, check with your parts stores or you could just "hot key" it........heat your key up with a lighter and stick it in the lock.............

I don't know if I would hot key it if it has a built in transponder.

Someday some engineer will design heated lock cylinders.

Re: FORD MONDEO BONNET WONT OPEN Sign In

unfortunately the bonnet lock had seized shut & i had to take it to my local Ford garage.
it cost £236.66p,which covered a new grill,locking unit,2 screws & labour+vat.

but the mechanic did tell me its a flaw which the mk3 has & its a very common problem which they see all to often at the garage.

anyway many thanks with your replies & have a merry xmasSmile

Re: FORD MONDEO BONNET WONT OPEN Sign In

This is now an old thread as they go "seriousfreedom" so please stick to ongoing threads. I've failed to contact ownership here to just archive "done" threads in a month or so automatically.

Stuck hoods/bonnets in this thread (same thing) is not uncommon and near 100% due to nobody every lubing hinges, cables latches and locks on a schedule. WD-40 works but frequently depending where real spray grease lasts longer but watch out that you don't overload areas that clothing may get all greased up if on a door.

Watch out for the 10 minute "lube" places as they couldn't have the time to do this as part of a service and they may mean well but no time for the price they charge either.

It's a rat-race world and folks don't want to drop a car off for plain maintenance like some did in years gone by. The old saying that a stitch in time saves nine applies to this like many things,

Also to add to Tom's advice....... recalls are never done for that reason. Recalls are only made for 2 reasons

emissions failure
safety

Common mechanical failures are not subject to recall if they don't fall under one of those two categories.
