Ford Triton Heads Sign In

Hey everyone out there. This one is for the mechanics and shop owners. I tuned up a Ford E250 last September. Yes, it was a Triton v8. It came back 2 weeks ago with a spark plug blown out of the head. Sound familiar. The customer wasn't happy. I checked the NHTSA website and that's when I found it. The Triton v8 and v10 have a defect in the head which causes this to happen. I went to the Ford dealer and they said this is common but Ford isn't standing behind it under warranty. Instead of swapping out the head Ford has a self tapping fitting which cuts into the head and the spark plug threads into it. They claimed of a high success rate and it only cost $140 to do. A lot cheaper than replacing the heads. So if you get one of these in your shop, and the customer says it's your fault you touched it last, there is a service bulletin out on this. Hope this saves on some sleepless nights.

Here's the pictures of the Helicoil kit that I've used to repair these striped out spark plug holes.

We use the same kit ahd have had really good success with it. Some of the repairs have over 50k on them and show no signs of fatigue.

Re: Ford Triton Heads Sign In

I'm glad that a lot of people are aware of this. I'll tell you, I was accused of screwing up the head almost a year after I tuned it up. I had a couple sleepless nights until I checked the website and found it was a documented issue. I thought I was going to have to eat the head. Thanks guys for the posts. I really didn't want anyone going through the anxiety that I had felt.
