please advise as to the cost & extent of repair of a on the colume transmition shifter... Ford Explorer...1996...150000+... V6... it will not move into gear & is just hanging loose... is this a simple repair that any shop can handle & how much $$

There are a few things it could be. The cable could be broken, the little bolts could be loose on the bottom of the steering column, the shift tube bushings could be worn out or the shift tube could be broken. Most shops should be able to do the repair. If it is the shift tube, I think that is a dealer only part unless you have a salvage yard to get one. Good luck. The repair should not be much more than 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours labor plus parts. Do not know what labor rate is in your area so a close guess is not feasable. Cost of parts is hard to guess also.
